A Journey of Discovery
As humans, we are the products of our own experiences. The combination of everything we've gone through, all the emotions and revelations we've had, becomes who we are. As I grew into adulthood, my experiences had a profound impact on my development, and led me to discover the value of canine enrichment that became a founding principle of Doglando.
Towards the end of my college education, my father and I talked about what would be next for me. When I told him I wanted to open a rescue, he had so many questions. How would I do this? How does a nonprofit work? How would I be able to support myself? I didn't have answers right away, and these conversations often left me feeling silly, like this dream was the most ridiculous idea ever. Still, I knew that this was my path. I began researching how I could pursue a career working with dogs and found out about a dog training course in New York City. I took a chance and traveled to New York to take the course.
While in New York, I became aware of the concept of doggy day cares. I had never heard of such a thing before and was very curious as to what went on in these places. So, I visited doggy day cares throughout New York, asking them what was working for them and what wasn't. As I tried to make sense of the answers to these questions, it became clear that what was missing was the concept of enrichment. To me, enrichment means freedom, autonomy, the authentic ability to make choices that is the very meaning of life itself. And that richness in quality of life, that possibility of experiences, is what Doglando is about. It's about creating a stimulating, engaging, enriching environment for our dogs.
To me, the University of Doglando is place of respite. It came from this idea of enrichment, of being able to create a place where I could make choices, where I could control the destination, and nobody could get in the way of that.
